The Hospital started its activity in 2006 with a team composed of 72 MDs, nurses and officers graduated or trained in Albania, Europe, Turkey and the U.S. Well known professors of Cardiology and Cardiovascular surgery from Turkey joined the team from the beginning.

During its first year, the Hospital served patients with cardiac problems in Albania and beyond. While the percentage of cardiac patients leaving Albania to get treated abroad reduced by 85% during the first year, many patients also came from Kosovo, Montenegro and Macedonia to get operated and treated in American Hospital.

In March 2008, the shareholder composition changed with Southeast Europe Equity Fund (managed by Bedminster Capital Management) investing into the company.

New ownership preserved the composition of Turkish and Albanian staff while involving European staff such as professors from Vienna and Graz University. The new American Hospital widened its activity focusing first in general surgery, orthopedics, eye surgery, urology and plastic surgery and then completing the service with 23 departments by mid-2008 and 26 by 2010.

KEY SERVICES OF AMERICAN HOSPITAL CENTRAL LABORATORY

The central laboratory of American Hospital offers a wide range of 760 single examinations; biochemical, microbiological, immunological, histopathological, etc. The lab is monitored per international standards and all the primary equipment is backed up in order to offer fail-safe, 24 hour service in the event of any equipment failure.

EMERGENCY SERVICE

American Hospital has offered 24 hour emergency service to its patients from December 2008. With its ambulances and access to medical helicopters provided under contract by the Ministry of Defense, American Hospital is able to transport patients from within and outside of Tirana and outside of Albania.

TRANSPLANTATION AND HEMODYALISIS

American Hospital was the first institution to perform renal transplantation in Albania. The transplantation team of American Hospital is composed of general surgeons, urologists and nephrologists and has successfully performed 55 transplantations. American Hospital has invested in the first private dialysis centers in the country, which contains 64 dialysis chairs.

COCHLEAR IMPLANT

The ENT team of American Hospital is the first and only one to perform a Cochlear Implant in the country. This very successful program started in December 2009 and we proudly now have more than 15 children and adults with implants.

IVF – EMBRYOLOGY – ANDROLOGY

American Hospital, for the first time in Albania, established a unique center of IVF – Embryology and Andrology. This significant investment is also performing prenatal genetic diagnostics for the first time in Albania.

AMERICAN EYE CENTER

An important department for American Hospital – the Center performs Refractive surgery, Cataract surgery, Glaucoma, Retinal disease treatment, Corneal diseases treatment, Corneal transplantation, Neuro – Ophthalmology, Eye Electrophysiology, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Oculoplastics, and Laser surgery.

American Hospital is the first and only health institution in the country which has committed itself to quality and has been certified for ISO 9001:2008, ISO 15189 and has also been awarded American Hospitals Association membership.
